The meeting comes at a time of persistent friction between the two powers, with disagreements spanning trade, technology restrictions, military activity in the Indo-Pacific and the future of Taiwan.

According to officials, both leaders emphasised the importance of maintaining open lines of communication and avoiding further escalation, even as deep divisions remain on key strategic issues.

Taiwan at the centre of tensions

A major focus of the discussions was Taiwan, which China regards as part of its territory, while the United States continues to maintain unofficial relations and provide defensive support to the island.

Xi is understood to have issued a firm warning over what Beijing sees as external interference in the Taiwan issue, underlining it as a “red line” in US-China relations.

Trade and economic pressure

Economic relations also featured prominently, with both sides seeking to manage ongoing trade disputes that have seen tariffs, export controls and supply chain tensions disrupt global markets.

Washington has pushed for greater market access for US goods, while Beijing has called for a reduction in restrictions on Chinese technology firms.

No major breakthrough was announced, but officials suggested discussions on trade mechanisms and future negotiations would continue.

Diplomatic tone despite divisions

Despite the sensitive topics, both leaders adopted a relatively restrained tone in public appearances, signalling an interest in preventing relations from deteriorating further.

The talks included formal ceremonies and a state banquet hosted by Chinese officials, reflecting the diplomatic weight attached to the visit.

No major agreement, but dialogue continues

While the meeting did not produce any significant policy announcements, both sides described the talks as constructive, with an emphasis on managing competition rather than escalating confrontation.

Analysts say the meeting reflects a broader attempt to stabilise one of the most important — and volatile — bilateral relationships in global politics, even as fundamental disagreements remain unresolved.
